National Hindu Students Forum
Over the last fifteen years, there has been a transformation on the campuses of UK universities and the general student community. From humble beginnings fifteen years ago NHSF has become the largest student body for Hindu students in Europe, with local chapters in over 51 higher education institutions. Put simply, NHSF's aim is to provide a platform for Hindu students and to develop a better understanding of the Hindu Dharma. Fifteen years ago, there was a general lack of representation for Hindu students at Freshers' Fairs. There were however, Asian, Indian, Christian, Jewish and Islamic societies, but nothing really that catered for Hindu students. This huge imbalance presented a great challenge not only for students but the whole community. Nevertheless, a group of students took up the challenge by setting up an organisation to serve the needs of all Hindu students and created what is now NHSF. Our aim is to provide a balanced and diverse range of activities both on a local and national level. Locally, societies hold a wide range of events from festival celebrations, antaksharee evenings, debates, talks, dinners, cultural shows, raas garbas and mandir visits. Nationally we have a variety of events that are as follows: The Annual Lecture: This is a prestigious lecture from a Hindu perspective, which has presented international speakers such as Mark Tully, Gopi Warrier and Professor Rajendra Singh. National Youth Conference: The youth conference is an annual event held in October/November. It allows students to come together from all over the country to learn, discuss and debate on a variety of issues, such as 'Hinduism and Science' and 'Hindu Contribution to World Thought and Philosophy'. Sewa Week: NHSF organises a national charity fundraising week. The aim is for individuals to develop an understanding of 'Sewa' (service) and to incorporate it as part of one's daily life. Local chapters are encouraged to organise fun and diverse events like a food run for the homeless, moviethon, sponsored fast, painting the local mandir and walkathons.
